The National Roman Museum – Palazzo Altemps

Museum

Palazzo Altemps is an important aristocratic residence of Renaissance time, nowadays one of the four locations of Museo Nazionale Romano together with Palazzo Massimo, Crypta Balbi and the Baths of Diocletian. Placed very close to Piazza Navona, the museum hosts important masterpieces of ancient sculpture coming from noble and precious collections, nowadays under National property. The set-up of the artworks perfectly dialogues with the palace, that recalls the arrangement of the collections of antiquities. The visit path, divided in two floors, consists of a succession of decorated rooms and of an intrigue of stairs and corridors that lead the visitors through all the discoveries.

The Museo per Tutti path

Visiting Palazzo Altemps is a great opportunity to show a person with intellective disability what an archaeological museum is.

Thanks to wide spaces and the artworks position, the building is easily accessible.

There is no defined path, therefore  visitors and their caregiver can move freely into the rooms according to their curiosity and interests. In the rooms the statues are distanced to avoid overcrowding, therefore the visitors can enjoy and focus on them without any problem of visual perception. Furthermore, in this museum there are no showcases with archaeological pieces, letting the ancient statuary be the main focus.

Thanks to the wide courtyard inside the building, the visitor can move away at any time in case of overcrowded room or sensory overload like background noises: there are many places where one can rest and then go back to the visit.
